Stories from the Hearts of Those
We have Served
I cannot say enough about the exceptional care that Jacquie received at Pioneer Lodge. The staff and support team that looked after her needs (and ours) were incredible! The palliative “team” is indeed just that! From the physicians, pharmacists, and nurses all the way to the cleaning staff and volunteers, Jacquie’s needs were met with humour, compassion, dignity, and respect.
Many days (and nights) the staff would sit with the family and hear stories about Jacquie and be a supportive presence. They often stayed after shift to sit with the family. They are exceptional individuals in a predetermined circumstance. The training of staff members to be in a supportive role such as this is monumental and essential as the need for rooms like this hospice room increases and designated beds and staff become short in supply.
After a 2-year battle with cancer, my uncle was admitted to Pioneer Lodge in January 2020, and within days was moved to the Palliative/Hospice Care room as his health began to deteriorate very quickly. It was important to us as a family to ensure he wasn’t alone through this, so we began taking shifts at The Lodge through the days and the nights. The furnishings provided by Heartland Hospice, including the recliners, TV etc. made this difficult process for our family at least more comfortable. To catch a few minutes of sleep/rest in the recliners provided while still being able to be close to him was a relief. Although due to COVID we were unable to use the family room, I can only imagine during regular times how useful and important this space would be for families during such a difficult time. The reading material placed in the room about end of life was invaluable and helped us as a family understand what my uncle was going through, what to expect, as well as to know the things my uncle (as well as my aunt and the rest of the family) were experiencing in the months and days leading up to his passing were a normal part of his mind and body preparing for end of life. On behalf of my family and myself, I thank you for the services your group provides for those of us who are on such a difficult journey.
